Recently, as the EU authorities have intensified their efforts to crack down on non-compliant products, major websites such as Amazon have also begun to rectify the non-compliant behaviors on their platforms one after another. For instance, at the German site, after the VAT review, another significant certification was examined - the WEEE certification.
A seller from the German site posted a plea for help on a certain online community: The product was taken down due to failing the WEEE review.
Earlier, many sellers were complained about for failing to meet the requirements of the EU WEEE regulations and also received rectification emails from Amazon one after another:
From the email content posted by the seller above, it can be seen that this seller is selling automotive LED lights. Due to the product not complying with the EU WEEE directive, it was complained about, which led to the removal of the listing.
When electronic and electrical products need to provide WEEE certification, how should sellers solve the problem? Below, we will first help you have a general understanding of the WEEE certification, and then list the documents required for the WEEE certification.
What is WEEE certification?
In 2002, the European Union passed two directives that had a significant impact on electronic and electrical equipment: one was the WEEE Directive (concerning the disposal of electronic and electrical equipment), and the other was the RoHS Directive (concerning the prohibition of the use of certain hazardous substances in electronic and electrical equipment).
In 2005, the ElektroG regulation (Electrical and Electronic Regulation) based on the WEEE Directive officially came into effect in Germany. According to this regulation, producers or importers of electrical and electronic products must complete the registration of their respective products.
For cross-border e-commerce, WEEE certification is rather complicated. It is recommended to find a professional third-party certification body to carry out the certification.
Which products require WEEE certification
Take the German site as an example. The WEEE certification is mainly for a certain category of products. The German ElektroG regulations classify electronic and electrical appliances into the following six categories:
- Large home electronic equipment
- Heat exchanger
- Display device
- Gas discharge lamp
- LED light bulb
- Small electronic equipment, IT and telecommunications equipment
